The Chinese health system is a bit like American solutions - if you get sick, you are ruined because you simply pay for your treatment. Although there are some indirect solutions - partial insurance through the employer, help for specific groups, reimbursement for medical treatment for retirees. Either way, you have to pay for serious illnesses. These are not small amounts, but they are certainly smaller than in Europe or North America. A big advantage is advanced technology, modern solutions regarding treatment methods, the use of lasers and robots that support major surgeries. I've heard different stories, I know different people in China who had serious health problems and the hospital stay was helpful and changed their lives for the better.
